Paths To Independence

Samantha Hill, OTR/L

I have been an occupational therapist for 19 years. I’ve worked in almost every setting you can find an OT in. My favorite settings are pediatrics, mental health, and independent living.

My current areas of specialization include:

  • School based services

  • Pediatric outpatient services

  • Trauma informed approaches

  • Executive function and skills based learning

I believe children develop confidence and independence when they understand themselves, recognize their strengths, and build practical skills that support participation in everyday life. Developing skills doesn’t happen in a vacuum.

Children learn by doing.

By exploring.

By exercising independence in safe, practical ways in their real environment.

As Ms. Frizzle from The Magic School Bus famously encouraged, children need opportunities to “take chances, make mistakes, and get messy!” I believe exploration, experimentation, and a little messiness are essential parts of learning, growing, and developing independence.
